In general, parents give advice to their children about eating right, exercise, sleep, watching television, etc to instill healthy habits. However, a new study published in BMC Public Health showed that preaching alone isn’t as effective as modeling the behaviors. Obesity is becoming an epidemic, and the research shows that kids eat better, exercise more, and watch TV less when their parents follow their own advice. As a result, these kids are healthier, more active and weigh less. The parents benefit from improved health as well since they are engaging in behaviors that improve their lifestyle. So in order to get your kids to follow your advice, practice what you preach! Keep cut up vegetables and fruit at home, exercise regularly, and put the cell phones away and find other downtime activities.
