Every year, millions of people use the New Year as their chance for a fresh start. You’ll often hear people say “New Year, New Me!” as they make resolutions to lose weight and become healthier. Unfortunately, that motivation is often short-lived. Research shows that only 8% of Americans actually stick to their resolutions! How can we prevent this and be sure that this time it actually works?
For starters, don’t use the New Year as your motivation. Underneath that “New Year’s resolution” there is probably a bigger reason for wanting to lose the weight and/or become healthier. Dig deep within yourself and find that motivation! Once you get to the core of why you want this new lifestyle, you can use that throughout the year to keep you going and propel you towards achieving your goals.
Setting those goals is also very important. The reason most people fail is that they set unrealistic goals for themselves. People want a quick fix and once they see how long change can actually take…that’s when things go wrong. It’s important to set small goals and focus on becoming healthy, rather than how fast you can drop those 20lbs. Realize that after many years of unhealthy behavior, it will take time to adjust to a new, healthier lifestyle. After all, it took you time to form these unhealthy habits – of course it will take just as long, if not longer, to correct them! Find something you genuinely enjoy doing – whether it’s a certain class, workout, or even a healthy food and go from there. If you are looking for long term success, you have to change your lifestyle and make things work for YOU!
Lastly, don’t be so hard on yourself! No one is perfect. If you slip up or find yourself falling back on old habits, do your best to catch it and start fresh the next day.
